PERMANENT METHODS

Permanent contraceptive methods are surgical procedures for either men or women that prevent the ability for someone to conceive.

TUBAL LIGATION

Also known as "getting your tubes tied," it involves surgically closing or blocking the fallopian tubes to prevent eggs from reaching the uterus.

MECHANISM

This procedure involves blocking or sealing the fallopian tubes, which carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. By preventing the egg from meeting sperm, fertilization is avoided. There are different methods for tubal ligation, including cutting, sealing, or placing clips on the tubes.

VASECTOMY

A surgical procedure that involves cutting or blocking the vas deferens, preventing sperm from being released during ejaculation.

MECHANISM

In a vasectomy, the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra, are cut or blocked. This prevents sperm from being ejaculated during sexual activity. While sperm production continues, the sperm are simply absorbed by the body and not released.
